About

How can we save the ocean? And how can the ocean save us?

Our ocean is in crisis. With overfishing, pollution and climate change, species are dwindling, ecosystems are changing and with that even more change ripples out and impacts us all. In this emotive call-to-action, expert marine biologist Emily Cunningham encourages us to rethink our relationship with the ocean and offers practical and sustainable solutions to tackle both short-term and systemic issues. Our Ocean to Save is a hopeful guide to what the future of the ocean, and with that the future of humanity, could look like, if only we take action.

From deep diving into the Antarctic ocean watching icefish swim by to studying nesting sea turtles on the beaches of Sri Lanka to taking working class children in England to see the sea for the first time, Emily has seen and felt the beauty of the ocean, its wildlife and its impact on people. She's also seen it changing. In Our Ocean to Save, she draws on her years of experience working in communities all around the world to paint a global picture of the state of the ocean, what its future may hold and how you can do your bit to help.
Emily Cunningham is a marine biologist and award-winning ocean conservationist. She currently leads WWF's global river dolphin conservation programme and studies dolphins as an Honorary Associate Research Fellow at the University of Exeter, UK.

She has over a decade of experience at the frontline of driving change for our ocean and all who depend on it, including underserved communities. Her work and research has taken her from Antarctica to the Amazon. She was awarded an MBE for her services to marine conservation and coastal communities in 2025.The question she is asked most often is 'What can I do to help the ocean?'. Our Ocean to Save is her reply. An essential and revelatory guide to ocean conservation and what you can do to help from marine biologist Emily Cunningham.
