When Henry Smix lets a runaway automobile loose on the streets of Bingville, it is only the first in a long series of collisions between the old ways and the new. As wages climb and money floods into this sleepy New England village, its citizens discover a troubling truth: prosperity alone cannot hold a community together.
The Prodigal Village: A Christmas Tale follows the lives of Bingville's colorful inhabitants - the imperious millionaire J. Patterson Bing, the crusading Judge Crooker, the fallen drunkard Hiram Blenkinsop, and above all young Bob Moran, the "Shepherd of the Birds." Crippled since childhood by the very automobile that opened the novel, Bob lies in his second-floor room watching the garden below, feeding birds, painting watercolors, and quietly becoming the moral conscience of an entire town.
With the same warmth and dry Yankee wit that made Eben Holden a million-copy bestseller, Irving Bacheller paints a searching portrait of a community that has mistaken wealth for virtue - and the Christmas miracle that sets it right. Through acts of small kindness, unlikely friendships, and the redemptive power of honest work and honest feeling, Bingville finds its way back to itself.
First published in 1920 by the Bobbs-Merrill Company, this novella originally benefited the American National Red Cross and stands as one of Bacheller's most heartfelt works. Now available as an audiobook, The Prodigal Village is the perfect companion for the Christmas season - a reminder that the richest communities are built not on money, but on mercy, dignity, and the courage to look after one another.
Ideal for listeners who enjoy: classic American fiction, holiday stories, small-town character studies, and tales of redemption.
