In 2011, a twenty-six-year-old with a physics degree and a laptop built the world's first online black market from a rented room in San Francisco.
He called it the Silk Road.
He was not a gangster. He had no criminal record, no cartel connections, no history of violence. He had a libertarian philosophy, and a single, consuming belief - that the government had no right to tell people what they could buy or sell and that the internet could prove it.
Hidden inside the darkest corner of the internet, it sold heroin, cocaine, forged passports, and counterfeit currency - delivered to your door in an ordinary envelope, paid for in digital currency that left no trace in any bank on earth. Over one hundred thousand customers across twenty-six countries used it. It processed more than one billion dollars before a single agent knew how to stop it.
This is the complete true story of how the Silk Road was built, how it operated, what it destroyed, and how a single careless post made years before anyone was looking brought the entire empire down.
A man who believed he was building a freer world met the full weight of the American justice system.
