About

Swami Satchidananda was one of the most influential yoga teachers to bring the spiritual traditions of India to the modern Western world. Revered as a teacher of yoga, meditation, interfaith understanding, and selfless service, he dedicated his life to promoting harmony among people of all backgrounds. His message was simple yet profound: that peace in the world begins with peace within the individual.

Born in Tamil Nadu, India, in 1914, Satchidananda became a disciple of the renowned spiritual master Swami Sivananda and was trained in the classical traditions of yoga and Vedanta. Following years of study, service, and spiritual practice, he was entrusted with carrying these teachings beyond India, eventually becoming one of the most recognized yoga masters in the United States and Europe. His international reputation expanded dramatically after his memorable opening address at the Woodstock Music and Art Fair, where he spoke to hundreds of thousands gathered during one of the defining cultural events of the twentieth century. Through lectures, books, ashrams, and educational institutions, he introduced countless students to Integral Yoga, a system designed to unite physical health, mental clarity, and spiritual realization.

This biography traces the remarkable journey of a man who helped transform yoga from a little-known Eastern discipline into a respected part of modern global culture. Drawing upon historical records, teachings, memoirs, and contemporary accounts, it explores his life, philosophy, travels, and enduring influence. More than two decades after his passing, Swami Satchidananda remains a significant figure in the worldwide history of yoga and spiritual education.
