In this debut historical fiction novel centered on a young pilot in WWII, readers will get an up-close and authentic narrative of the excitement, horror, and sacrifice war brings to soldiers and their families. Meet Felix Ernest Scott, a real American P-51 fighter pilot who died while serving his country during World War II. Starting with his childhood, readers will fall in love with the story of a little Texas farm boy and how his dream of flying was finally realized. After the bombing of Pearl Harbor, Felix dropped out of the Agricultural & Mechanical College of Texas, leaving San Saba County's safety to learn how to become a pilot, protect his family, and serve his country. Fly along with Felix as he begins training as a "dodo" until he completes his replacement pilot training more than a year later. Unlike other historical fiction, Felix's life (and death) were based on a true story. The author is a descendant of him and the Scott family, who have chosen not to share Felix's narrative until now due to the overwhelming sadness of losing their only son and a brother to his three wonderful sisters. However, as Felix's great-nephew, author Andrew Bass felt Felix's spirit reach out so that he could unpack the stashed-away memories from yesteryear to learn more about an uncle who had long been dead but never forgotten. Flying with Felix's chapters are filled with unrealized hopes and dreams, lost loves, sacrifice, and heartbreak. It is a story for any reader interested in history, family, war, or the promise of fulfilling your purpose.
