About

What happens when the man you expect to validate your anger instead challenges everything you believe? When Duke Kell arrived at the University of La Verne in 1997, he was carrying far more than a football scholarship. Homeless only a short time before, estranged from family, haunted by violence, and searching for meaning, he believed America had failed him. Inspired by the revolutionary writings of Eldridge Cleaver, the former Black Panther leader, Duke expected to hear a call for resistance.Instead, he heard something completely unexpected.Over the next several months, a series of chance encounters with Cleaver became the foundation for an extraordinary mentorship. Through candid conversations about freedom, forgiveness, personal responsibility, faith, race, liberty, and the search for truth, Duke watched as one of America's most controversial political figures revealed the remarkable transformation that had carried him from militant revolutionary to advocate for reconciliation and spiritual renewal.Light in the Storm is more than a memoir. It is the story of two men from vastly different backgrounds whose lives intersected at exactly the right moment. It is a deeply personal account of redemption, the courage to question one's own beliefs, and the power of forgiveness to heal even the deepest wounds.Honest, thought-provoking, and deeply human, Light in the Storm invites readers to look beyond labels and ideology and rediscover a timeless truth: sometimes the greatest revolutions begin not in the streets, but in the human heart. Duke is a registered member of the Citizen Potawatomi Nation who grew up in the Denver Metro area. He was one of the founding members of Ghost Crew A hip-hop group in Southern California, and Bodhi an alternative rock band. After earning a B.A. in journalism from the University of Northern Colorado and completing his Graduate work in Education at Cal State San Bernardino, Duke became an Author and Educator. By age 27, he was the youngest professor on campus at Chaffey College, wrote and directed his first feature-length movie and signed on to teach at a school for troubled youth. Now in his 40's, he and his family have made Kailua Kona their home where he continues to be active in education and the arts.
