Looking Backward is a utopian novel by Edward Bellamy, envisioning a future society based on social equality and economic prosperity. Set in the year 2000, the story follows Julian West, who falls into a deep sleep in 1887 and awakens to find himself in a transformed world. In this idealistic society, known as the "Great Trust," all citizens enjoy equal access to resources and opportunities, and labor is organized cooperatively for the common good. Through West's eyes, readers witness the benefits of a planned economy, universal education, and social harmony. Bellamy's vision of a utopian future serves as a critique of the inequalities and injustices of Gilded Age America, offering a hopeful alternative grounded in socialist principles. "Looking Backward" continues to inspire readers with its optimism and vision of a more equitable and just society.
