West Virginia Delegate Derrick Evans never expected to become the face of political persecution when he peacefully entered the Capitol building on January 6, 2021. In this powerful and deeply personal memoir, Evans takes readers on his harrowing journey from being a newly-elected Republican representative to becoming a federal inmate labeled as an "insurrectionist."
After attending the "Stop the Steal" rally in Washington DC, Evans found himself swept into one of the most controversial events in recent American history. His ten-minute walk through the east side of the Capitol-captured on his own social media livestream-would lead to his arrest by the FBI in front of his children, the loss of his political position, and ultimately, a felony conviction and three months in federal prison.
"Political Prisoner" provides an intimate, behind-the-scenes account of the legal ordeal that consumed nearly two years of Evans' life as he fought against what he describes as politically-motivated prosecution. With unflinching honesty, Evans recounts the trauma inflicted on his young family, the harsh realities of prison life, and his unwavering determination to stand by his beliefs despite enormous personal cost.
More than just a personal story, this memoir raises profound questions about freedom of speech, equal application of justice, and the weaponization of federal agencies against political opponents in modern America.
