A gritty tale of Toronto's underworld during Prohibition. Originally published in New York in 1928, this book announced the coming of the urban novel in Canada through the story of Harry Trotter-a man who descends into a life of crime in the immigrant "Ward" of 1920s Toronto. Superficial and self-centered, Trotter establishes himself as a major bootlegger in a city dominated by foreign gangs. As he navigates a world of speakeasies, violence, and promiscuity, he struggles with his identity and the moral decay that consumes him. With an introduction by James Dubro, this edition offers a vivid depiction of a bygone era and a compelling exploration of the dark side of urban life. Perfect for readers of crime fiction, historical novels, and those interested in Canadian literary classics.
