50 years on deck. Zero regrets. One unforgettable story.
You know the life. Up at 5 a.m., home at 8 p.m., weekends consumed by meets, phone calls from irate parents at night, and a paycheck that makes your dentist laugh. You have poured yourself into a sport that tests your patience, your relationships, and your sanity. And yet, somehow, you keep showing up. You keep coaching. Because when your swimmer touches the wall and looks up at the clock, that moment makes it all worth it.
In Swim Coach: Life in the Deep End, veteran coach Kim Musch opens up about a lifetime spent in and around the pool. From his beginnings as a five-year-old summer rec swimmer to becoming a seventeen-year-old head coach, through decades leading the program at the University of California, Santa Cruz, and into his current role as a volunteer high school JV coach, Musch shares the trials, triumphs, and hard-won lessons of a career defined by dedication. With Olympic swimmers, national champions, NCAA titles, and a garage full of dusty plaques to show for it, he reflects honestly on what worked, what didn't, and what kept him coming back year after year.
Inside you will discover:
• Why the best young swimmers play multiple sports and resist early specialization
• The simple, foundational coaching philosophy behind decades of championship results
• Real stories of parents, teenagers, pool disasters, and the beautiful chaos of building a swim program from scratch
Part memoir, part locker room conversation, this is the book swim coaches, swimmers, and swim parents will see themselves in on every page.
