The war comes to East Africa, Tarzan finds his estate burned and his wife apparently dead, and he goes into the German lines with nothing left to lose. Burroughs wrote it in 1919, and the fury of the middle chapters is wartime fury. Then the ape-man walks into a desert valley where a lost people worship lions, and the book turns back into a Burroughs adventure. Fifty-eight plates of jungle and tropical flora by painters including Marianne North and Edwin Landseer run through the volume, their orchids, water plants and drinking tigers keeping the wild world of the ape-man always in view.
