Five people came to study the birds. Something else came to study them. For Bronx field biologist Eli Bonilla-Serrano, a seven-day survey on North Brother Island should be a professional triumph. A heron colony has returned to the abandoned quarantine island, and his team has secured a rare opportunity to discover why. But the birds refuse to enter parts of the ruins. The empty hospital sounds as though it is breathing. And when the team calls for help, their phones reach a hospital that closed decades ago. Then one of their own disappears. Mary Mallon still makes her rounds. She is patient, attentive, and eager to hear whatever ails them. Aches. Fears. Secrets. She wants to make them clean-and her idea of treatment leaves no room for refusal. With rescue days away and the island's dead rising with the tides, Eli and his companions must learn the rules of a place where admitting what hurts can be fatal. Staying alive means hiding their suffering from the very people they need to trust. Set amid the ruins of a real New York island, The Clean Hand is an atmospheric novel of supernatural and psychological horror about care, confinement, and the terrible cost of being made well.
