"The Lost Continent" by Cutcliffe Hyne is a classic speculative adventure novel, first published in 1899. It's also known as "The Lost Continent: The Story of Atlantis" and delves into the fabled story of Atlantis, the advanced civilization that, according to legend, sank into the sea. Hyne's narrative is rich with imagination, capturing the political and social structures of Atlantis, as well as its eventual downfall due to a mix of natural disaster and moral decay.
The story is presented through the eyes of Deucalion, a high-ranking and noble Atlantean. The novel unfolds with Deucalion's experiences, including political intrigue, romance, and warfare. Hyne's Atlantis is technologically advanced, with airships and submarines, and its society is a mix of enlightened knowledge and stark class divisions. The novel combines elements of fantasy, science fiction, and adventure, making it a precursor to many modern works in these genres. It reflects the values and interests of the late Victorian era, including imperialist notions and a fascination with lost worlds and ancient civilizations.
