The Monastery

The Scottish borders at the Reformation, a monastery whose lands are about to be taken, and a spirit attached to a family that appears when the water is low. Scott put a supernatural figure at the center, as he almost never did elsewhere, and it divided readers then as it does now. This edition includes a gallery of 42 plates of painting bound with the book, among them works by David Roberts, J. M. W. Turner and Lucas Cranach the Elder, dating from 1510 to 1895.
