Under Section 3 of the Obscene Publications Act 1959, a video shop didn't need a trial to lose its stock. If a magistrate agreed a tape was liable to deprave and corrupt, the copies could simply be declared forfeit and destroyed - no jury, no named defendant, and often no public record beyond a police log and a stripped shelf. It was the lower-bar, higher-volume side of Britain's video nasty panic, and it swept up far more titles than the 39 films that ever reached a full obscenity conviction.Video Nasty Files, Vol. 4: Section 3, Part 2 completes the forfeiture list begun in Volume 3, running alphabetically from The Last Horror Film through Zombie Lake. Because the bar for seizure was so low, the range here is the widest and strangest of the whole series: shot-on-a-shoestring regional obscurities and long-forgotten Eurociné zombie cash-ins sit on the same shelf as Tobe Hooper's The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, John Carpenter's The Thing, Don Coscarelli's Phantasm, David Cronenberg's Scanners and Rabid, George Romero's Night of the Living Dead, and Dario Argento's Suspiria - films now taught in film schools that once shared a police evidence box with titles almost nobody has heard of since. Each chapter delivers the same complete profile established across this series: the plot, the production history, why the title drew police and trading-standards attention, how its forfeiture proceeding unfolded where a hearing can be documented, and where the film and its reputation stand today. Illustrated throughout with original, specially commissioned artwork evoking the VHS era without reproducing a single actual poster or box cover, this closing volume finishes the fuller, messier history the series set out to tell - the tapes that were prosecuted and the tapes that weren't, the ones destroyed without a headline and the ones now sold as prestige Blu-rays, and everything in between. Malcolm Ashworth is a film historian and writer specializing in the censorship battles of British horror cinema. Drawing on years spent tracking down obscure, banned, and disputed titles from the UK's "video nasty" era, Ashworth combines archival research with a genuine affection for the disreputable end of genre filmmaking. Video Nasty Files is his ongoing project to document, film by film, the notorious 1980s Director of Public Prosecutions list - the tapes that were seized, the trials that followed, and the strange afterlives these films have led since. He lives in the United Kingdom.
