A memoir, a set of psychospiritual maps, and a year-long practice for anyone whose faith has outgrown its old container.
Johan Tredoux grew up in apartheid-era South Africa, formed by Dutch Reformed and then Nazarene Christianity and by a theology that made God's love something to be earned. He became a senior pastor. He also began to lose the certainties that made the work possible. What followed was deconstruction, vocational loss, grief, and a slow reconstruction that eventually led him to the bedside of the dying as a board-certified clinical chaplain.
Doug Scott, MA, MSW, LCSW, has practiced as a psychospiritual therapist since 2001. Over those years he developed three frameworks for helping clients understand their own stories:
• The Iceberg of Human Experience-the conscious, subconscious, and unconscious levels operating in us at once
• The Law of Three-how contrast becomes tension, and how tension resolves either into transformation or into the familiar relief that keeps the old pattern spinning
• The Tripolar Self-the Floating Self shaped by performance and approval, the Significant Self that chooses, and the Anchored Self that is grounded in the Ground of Being and gathered into community
The Withness Project interleaves the two. Johan's narrative carries the book across five life stages; Doug's "Doug Weighs In" commentary follows each chapter, naming the pattern underneath the story-including the path Johan could have taken and didn't. The result reads as mirror and frame together: the story shows readers something of themselves, and the frameworks turn on the light in the room.
The title turns on a single distinction. Witness watches from a safe distance. With-ness enters the shared field and allows itself to be changed. That distinction names Johan's shift from living for God to living from God, and it names the method the book offers its readers.
Because this is a book meant to be used, not only read. Every part closes with reflection questions, guidance for handling difficult and potentially traumatic material, and worksheets built on the three frameworks. The design supports a year-long process: read a portion of the story, learn the framework that illuminates it, write the corresponding chapter of your own psychospiritual biography, and share it in a small, safe group-where two or three are gathered.
Written for:
• Clergy facing burnout, isolation, or the particular loneliness of leading others through a faith you are questioning yourself
• Chaplains, spiritual directors, therapists, and pastoral caregivers
• Anyone in deconstruction and reconstruction who wants a map rather than a verdict
• Small groups, clergy cohorts, and formation programs seeking a year-long shared curriculum
Your questions are evidence of growth. Your inherited patterns are workable. Your story, told in the company of people who can hold it, is the raw material of transformation.
