After her education at Malvern Girls College and Chelsea College of Physical Education, Georgiana Melrose embarked on a varied career, starting as a gymnastic and games mistress. Then, on her marriage, went to live in France where she and her husband, Tony Melrose - a writer and broadcaster - inaugurated English programs from Radio Lyons.
During the war she worked as a personnel manager in a large aircraft factory. When it was over she joined the Control Commission for Germany working in the branch controlling Hamburg Radio. Here she wrote the scripts for the English language programs aimed at schools and colleges to throw light on the British and American 'way of life'.
When controls were relinquished she remained in Hamburg at the request of the North German Radio to carry on the work, and stayed for a further twelve years.

Despite the confused and at times contradictory attitudes of the authorities, much was done by ordinary members of the Occupation Forces to help the German people back to normal civilized living.
