This Data Center Primer book describes the foundational technical and business aspects of a large-scale data center from the perspective of the data center operator. The Data Center Primer by James Soh is a comprehensive guide to the rapidly evolving data center ecosystem, which serves as the foundational infrastructure for artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and machine learning. Drawing from over 30 years of experience in designing and managing facilities across Southeast Asia and China, Soh provides a timely reference for both newcomers and industry professionals. The book highlights the critical role data centers play as the "power generation plants" of the modern digital world, where the demand for resilient infrastructure-offering non-stop power and cooling within secure environments-continues to surge globally.Written specifically through the lens of a data center operator, the text moves beyond theoretical concepts to address the practical challenges of delivering scalable and efficient facilities. It explores the shift toward hyperscale campuses and standardized, repeatable blueprints that allow for the rapid deployment required by today's technology giants. By covering essential topics such as project management fundamentals, operational workflows, and aligning services with client needs, the Data Center Primer aims to prepare readers for the next generation of infrastructure, particularly in high-growth markets like Malaysia, Indonesia, and Thailand.Equip yourself or enhance your people with knowledge about the data center ecosystem, and map your knowledge map to support your job growth, be part of growing and expanding mission-critical facilities, i.e., data centers. From facilities and IT to design engineers, consultants, vendors, and regulators-so you get faster decisions, fewer escalations, and a team that represents your leadership the way you intend. Most data center leaders don't suffer from a lack of smart people. They suffer from uneven depth of knowledge and inconsistent language across teams and partners when discussing risk, capacity, architecture, and operations management. That's what this book shares and equips you to fix. With 120,000 words and 26 original diagrams, I've consolidated concepts, patterns, Southeast Asia cases, and trade‑offs that usually live in scattered slide decks, handover notes, and individual heads. Instead of each group explaining the data center from its own silo, your people can work from a shared, structured view of how everything fits together. For senior stakeholders, that means:- One story to stakeholders, not conflicting versions.- Faster, cleaner decisions from a common understanding.- Less dependence on a few "key people" to be in every meeting whose purpose is just to limit misunderstanding. If you're accountable for data center strategy, projects, investment, audits, operations, or transformation, this lets you raise the knowledge floor without building a massive internal curriculum from scratch.Kindle: instant reach across your teams (including Kindle Unlimited).Print: a durable desk copy for core leaders when the stakes are high.Equip and enhance your people efficiently, and let the outcomes follow.
