Exceptional Places Illustrated is a guide to the most iconic and extraordinary historic places in the United States. It highlights historic districts that originated as central business districts of cities, towns, or villages, alongside their adjoining mixed-use neighborhoods. This illustrated volume serves as a companion to Exceptional Places: A Comparative Field Guide to Iconic and Extraordinary Historic Districts, which offers more in-depth profiles and analyzes the opportunities of historic preservation as well as the challenges posed by gentrification, elitification, overtourism, and loss of character.
