Despite this, he discovers a refuge in the youth-driven cultural revolution of the sixties: Soho's lively jazz clubs, the rebellious beat counterculture, and the power of his own words. Eventually, he escapes to the seaside town of Hastings, where peace and stability replace his erratic youth.
